Mission
EQ Annex is a not-for-profit initiative and its mission is to discover and utilize available resources (e.g. books, podcasts, articles) to bring knowledge & awareness of emotional intelligence beginning with children and fostering their EQ development into adulthood for the well-being of society.
Our goal is to empower people with the knowledge and awareness of emotional intelligence, beginning at a young age, so they can become future mentors to the next generation.
What’s EQ? (aka Emotional Intelligence)
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand, identify, manage, and use emotions in an effective and positive way. It's knowing that our emotions can drive behavior that impact other people, either negatively or positively, and learning to manage those emotions.
Why EQ?
Having high EQ helps people communicate better, reduce anxiety/stress, defuse conflicts, improve interpersonal relationships, empathize with others, and become more resilient in overcoming life's challenges.
With effort and practice, Emotional Intelligence can be learned and improved upon.
Daniel Goleman, who wrote Emotional Intelligence (1995), describes 5 key elements of Emotional Intelligence:
Self-Awareness - Ability to recognize one's own emotions, character, motives, and desires, and the effects it may have on others. This is the foundation of emotional intelligence because the other key elements rely on us being able to identify and understand our own emotions.
Self-Regulation - Ability to manage and control one's own emotions by not acting on raw feelings in an impulsive or destructive manner. It allows us to develop the ability to consider various solutions to a particular problem or situation.
Motivation - Passion to work for internal rewards outside of external ones, such as money and status, by finding joy and purpose in what you do, curiosity in learning, and working to achieve your goals.
Empathy - Ability to identify and understand other people's emotions, and treat them accordingly to their emotional reactions.
Social Skills - Ability to successfully manage relationships and build networks.
